When to Use a Grow Light: Signs Your Plants Need More Light

Use a grow light when your plants show clear signs of light deficiency — leggy stems, pale leaves, slow or stalled growth — or when your situation makes adequate natural light impossible: seed starting in late winter, herb growing in a north-facing kitchen, or keeping high-light plants alive through short winter days. Etiolation (Stretching Toward the Light)

Long, thin stems with large gaps between leaves — commonly called “leggy” growth — is the clearest sign of insufficient light. The plant is extending itself to capture more. Seedlings etiolate rapidly (within days) and will collapse if not corrected. In established plants, etiolation develops gradually over weeks and is sometimes mistaken for normal growth.

Pale or Yellow Leaves From the Top Down

Chlorophyll production drops when there isn’t enough light to sustain it. Leaves become light green or yellow. Importantly, light deficiency yellowing starts at the top of the plant — the newest growth — unlike nitrogen deficiency which yellows older lower leaves first.
